We believe families can have a summer holiday that is full of laughter, play and spiritual renewal.

For over 20 years, we’ve been giving families just that.  We’ve been serving up savory meals, ocean breezes, crisp linens, and lots of green grass for bare feet to roam.

Perched on a hill overlooking Howe Sound, Barnabas Landing is a one-of-a-kind place:  cottage-style rooms with your own private bath, healthy and kid-friendly meals, fun activities for the family (including every imaginable water sport) and take-your-breath-away views.

Come and join us.  It’s a week that will lift your heart.

SINGLE PARENT FAMILY RETREAT

A Journey of Discovery

We are all on a journey of discovery, learning about our Creator, our Saviour, and ourselves. We will be looking at the book of Joshua to lean into what it could look like to "let go" of whatever you are carrying. A measure of our health and well-being comes from self-realization. As we can identify things that hold us back and uncover who we are at our core, we will be free to live life as it was intended to the full.

Our speaker this year is passionate about relationships and adventure: put them together and you have camp!  Julie has worked in different roles in youth outreach through the organization of Young Life for the past 22 years so comes to us with relational, scriptural and story-telling experience. She loves people's stories and walking along-side them to see God's love and compassion at work. She also loves anything outdoors (hiking, biking, snow shoeing, snowboarding, skiing, rollerblading), cooking, coffee (but decaf), and chocolate (especially dark chili). She is more than half way through her masters in counselling, enjoying the program but missing reading novels!

Julie has been married to Peter for 16 years and they have 3 kids, ages 12, 11, and 6.

The cost for this retreat is $260 for the adult (includes room) and $93 per child.

Mark Buchanan Jun 24 - 29, 2018

"Walk This Way"

Based on his upcoming book, Pedestrian: Keeping Pace with the 3-Mile-an-Hour God, Mark Buchanan will explore - and then we will all practice - how God meets us and changes us “on the road,” as we walk, listen, observe. We together will recover the ancient practice of walking as both a physical and spiritual discipline, a form of prayer, and a way of knowing God.
Note: provision will be made for alternative exercises for those who, for whatever reason, cannot physically walk.

Mark Buchanan and his wife Cheryl live in Calgary, Alberta, where Mark is associate professor of Pastoral Theology at Ambrose Seminary. Educated at UBC and Regent College, Mark is a pastor, teacher, speaker, and the author of seven books as well as the forthcoming novel, David. He has also written numerous articles for Christianity Today, Faith Today, Leadership Journal, Discipleship Journal, Conversations, Seven and several other magazines. Cheryl has her MASF (Masters in the Art of Spiritual Formation) from Carey Theological College and is a Spiritual Director. They love the opportunity to travel and minister together, encouraging and strengthening the body of Christ. They have three young adult children.

Mark Warren Jul 15 - 20, 2018

Heaven, Your Calling, and Kingdom Communication

How does the hope of heaven impact how we live our calling, and how we talk with those we love most? Our unique journey this week will involve exploring how the reality and voice of heaven can work backwards to enable us to stay focused on our God-given calling, and transform how we communicate through love with the people in our lives.
Through stories and searching the Scriptures we will make a more lasting connection with the hope of heaven, and its influence on how we steward our calling, and how we master our tongue. We will explore tools for identifying core gifts of your calling, and we will practice skills of communication that will change the way you interact with those you love and those the Lord is trying to reach through you.
“I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he has called you, the riches of his glorious inheritance in his holy people, 19 and his incomparably great power for us who believe.” Eph. 1:18-19a

David & Nancy Collins have lived lives of international travel and cross-cultural exposure. They both have been raised in Christian homes and both came to a place of deep longing for more of God. They began to search for those who seemed to have a more intimate experience than theirs and sought to be taught by those who had journeyed more deeply with God. They come to Barnabas with desires of passing on the things they have discovered in the process.

Family Retreats

Justyn Rees, Russ Rosen, Brett Ziegler Aug 19 - 24, 2018

The Story Told and Sung

Using wit and warmth, Justyn, Russ, and Brett enthusiastically take us into a world of wonder and exploration, exposing the emotion of each moment with subtle details that form a new picture in the mind and colour the story with fresh understanding.

JUSTYN REES
I’m Justyn and I spell my name with a “Y” because I am always asking questions. I am a storyteller with one wife, three adult children, seven grandchildren and five great grandchildren to practice on. Most of my stories originated in the Bible, the greatest story ever told. Actually I recently re-wrote the whole Bible as one continuing story…“To Make a Long Story Short.”
I purchased a guitar from a thrift shop when I was 16 and learned 3 chords. With them I founded “The Peacemakers” - one of the very first Christian rock bands in the UK. That was way back in the early sixties when the Beatles still had short hair. We recorded several albums, which you can still experience on YouTube (but I wouldn’t)
We moved to Canada in 1982, and have made it home ever since. I don’t fit well in a box, so we established a society named “Upstream” and under that banner, led a team of young musicians, dancers and actors on a 5-year pilgrimage of reconciliation from Vancouver Island to Newfoundland. That same concern for reconciliation inspired us to lead a delegation from twelve denominations to genocide-ravaged Rwanda.
My favorite thing is to tell stories along with my good friends Russ Rosen and Brett Ziegler, two amazing musicians who make the whole thing dance with life. So how exciting is this; we get to come to Barnabas this summer to tell our stories, sing our songs, all the while eating great Barnabas food!

RUSS ROSEN

Russ is a well-travelled singer/songwriter with more than a dozen albums, and many Canadian and international tours to his credit. He has partnered with Justyn Rees on several music and story tours and has pioneered many art/faith ventures. He runs a little company called Big Tree Publishing, which really is a group of friends making music, writing books and doing shows. Russ has been in level one hiphop dance for five years and now he’s trying his feet at tap! As father of three dancers and the husband of a dance school director, he finds his attempts at hiphop the best way to do his fatherly duty of embarrassing his kids.

BRETT ZIEGLER

Brett is a musician, actor, live sound engineer, worship leader, producer and teacher. He has played keyboard instruments, percussion instruments, or saxophones on more than 65 album projects (Stephen Toon, Graham Ord, Dan Bremnes, Ryan McAllister, The Wiebes, Vivace, Drumeo), toured throughout Canada (Russ Rosen Band, Laurell, Red Rock Diner), and worked in professional theatre in casts, crews, bands and design teams (Pacific Theatre, Arts Club Theatre Company, Gateway Theatre). He wants to be a catalyst for excellent artistic collaboration, to tell stories through music and theatre with joy, beauty, freshness and passion.

Family Retreats

Cam Roxburgh Aug 27 - 31, 2018

NEW THIS SUMMER! This week will be for couples and families with teens age 15  and up as we try to accommodate more people this summer. Due to many of our summer staff having returned to university we cannot run a children's program but will have one for teens and free time will include waterfront. There may be some other surprises in store for this slightly shortened week!

Live Like That: Life with Christ in the Kingdom of God
Why do we often think there is more to the Christian life than what we are experiencing? Why do our neighbours often look at the life of Christians and ask - "Is that all?” Our identity: we will talk about the nature of God (He is one, love, creator, and father) and therefore we become children, co-creators, loving and family…. Our Character - God is Holy and we are called also to be holy - what does that mean? Our Vocation - God is a missionary God and therefore we are called to be missionaries…. even in our neighbourhoods.
Cam is a missionary who loves the church in Canada. He is a pastor, a leader, a teacher, and a husband and father. Cam planted an inner city church in Vancouver, BC in 1992. Southside Community church has grown to four congregations in four neighbourhoods, seeing transformation in each. From this experience, Cam led an organization called Church Planting Canada (35 denominations working at planting church across Canada) and has developed the Forge Canada Missional Training Network which helps denominations, churches and leaders across North America to become missional and to multiply into new neighbourhoods. He also serves as the VP for Missional Initiatives for the North American Baptists.
Cam speaks regularly at conferences, has taught at several seminaries, consults with denominations, and served on committees for the Evangelical Fellowship of Canada. His great passion remains for Christ working in a local community of followers of Jesus to see neighbourhood transformation.
Cam has been married to Shelley for 28 years. Together they have four children. They live in Surrey BC.
